Way to fix is start computer with a floppy or CD boot disk, then at DOS prompt type the following pertaining to the Hard Disk Partition that is not being recognised For a bare disk, discmgmt.msc is typed into the command prompt where one eventually sees the graphical display of the drive in the right-hand-side of the monitor. the muticard reader takes H: so i had to manualy change 40 computers muticard readers drive letter to the zxy.. I did all the obvious stuff, googled the problem, went a couple of different routes and still never got in it. see this
I also don't find it as a hidden device as one person suggested. this worked for me on my Compaq nx9420. Microsoft support site did not have any relevant information. I had no problems installing Windows (XP) onto the new hard drive, but now I canít access the old drive that had all my important data on it.

well heres the problem. Although I am a highly experienced computer user, the concept of changing the drive letter did not occur to me. Thank you very much. In the bottom of the screen BOTH drives are shown as drive 0. I have somewhat of a different problem. I got a hp laptop from a friend to re install windows for them and I got the error mentioned above.
