I believe there's an alternative to hacking the css this way, by forcing IE's hasLayout - but I've never had the time to investigate. Forcing the "show" this way worked every time and was undetectable to the user (unless they have javascript disabled…). The same page on a different server acts in a different way. IE's hasLayout is triggered by setting height or width.
