I do have a desktop and I think maybe the best option would be to do it on the desktop. It really depends on your needs. After Windows is done installing, can I delete the recovery partition, shrink the Windows partition, create the Ubuntu partition, and have Ubuntu use the EFI partition that Windows made? mostly empty, though...

My one PC with Windows 8 is now nagging me to update to 10 but I had to move partitions around to give it more room. You can make your root partition (in this case your only 'linux only' partition) as little as 10GB (even smaller if you want), but I'd recommend at least 20 or 30.
